I am from the UK and travelling in Vietnam for less than 15 days, I am entering the country via a land crossing from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City, will I need a visa? Will I get in trouble for not having a visa with the guards?

It is inform that if you enter Vietnam by land crossing and stay for less than 15 days, you will not need visa, just bring your passport with you

I am an Australian and intend to enter Vietnam by land from Cambodia near Phnom Penh. I will be flying out of Ho Chi Minh City 2weeks later. Do I need a visa and if so how best to obtain it. My travel companion is also entering Vietnam at the same border but will be staying in Vietnam a week longer. What visa will he need? Thanks
