As a U.S. citizen, I would need to get a visa for 35 USD, and then would have to pay an additional 135 USD to get it stamped?? Even though I would just be in Vietnam for two days..

It is correct that even if you just stay 2 days in Vietnam, you have to pay the stamping fee 135USD/person at the airport to get visa for 1 year. Because Vietnam Immigration now just issues 1 year multiple visa for US citizens. This is the law of Vietnam Immigration and we have to follow it. We only charge you 35USD/person for visa service fee.
