Do I need Visa for transit only?

Hi, I am a Hong Kong citizen and my friend is a China citizen.
Our flights are:
- Hong Kong to Hanoi arriving at 15:35; and
- Hanoi to Luang Prabang, Laos departing at 18:50 same day.
We will stay in the airport, do we still need a visa?

Normally, if you just transit without going out the airport, you will not need visa. However, you should ask the airline again if they will ask you for visa or not
