Single or Multiple Entry Visa Required?

Is a single entry visa okay if you fly into Hanoi, travel to a Vietnamese island and then return to mainland Vietnam? Or would a multiple entry visa be required? Are multiple entry visas only required if leaving Vietnam to enter another country?
